A seismic survey scheduled to be conducted off the wild coast hit a nerve with the public due to the pristine nature of the marine ecosystem. Thousands of people nation wide protested to shell asking them to stop the potentially destructive survey marine seismic survey. In support, Greenpeace Africa asked me to shoot a banner with divers covering their ears underwater in the kelp forest.
Protect the West Coast
The West coast of South Africa is mostly out of the eye of the public but not from mining companies. The same ancient river systems that deposited diamonds along this coast millions of years ago also deposited a number of other heavy minerals that have become more and more sought after. Rutile, ilmenite and garnet, to name a few, are mined from active beaches on the coastline and ancient beach deposits further inland that were deposited when sea levels were much higher than today. PTWC has noticed that because these mines are out of the public eye, they have been slipping up on a number of protocols that should be enforced to protect the environment they are mining. Mining and exploration concessions have been granted by the SA government along the entire coastline meaning that if this is not stopped, the pristine beaches, endemic coastal flora and the wild animals that live there could all be in peril.
